Who are The Saint Cecilia Singers ? ?
One of the UK's most respected chamber choirs, The Saint Cecilia Singers was founded in 1949 by Donald Hunt. The choir celebrated its 60th Anniversary in May with a special concert conducted jointly by the founder and its current conductor, Ashley Grote, Assistant Director of Music at Gloucester Cathedral. The choir has a strong link with the Cathedral and performs two or three concerts there each season. The choir also performs throughout the county and beyond, bringing new music to new audiences. There have been successful tours to America, France and Sweden in recent years.
The choir is a dedicated group of enthusiastc and gifted amateur and semi-professional singers. Over recent years the choir has built an enviable reputation for its versatility, innovative programming and high standards. Its extensive repertoire covers secular and sacred music from Byzantine chant to challenging contemporary works. The Singers have premiered works by John Sanders, Andrew Millington, Mark Blatchly, Mark Lee, Keith Amos, Giles Swayne and most recently, Bob Chilcott.
They have broadcast on BBC television and radio and also recorded on both the Priory and Lammas labels to critical acclaim.
